In a powerful show of solidarity, medical professionals in Nagpur held a candle march on Friday evening, protesting the brutal rape and murder of a doctor in Kolkata. The march, started from Samvidhan Square, witnessed participation from doctors representing the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Indira Gandhi Government Medical College and Hospital (IGGMCH), and the Ayurvedic College.
This demonstration is part of a broader protest organized by the Indian Medical Association (IMA), which has sparked similar actions across the country. Medical professionals are uniting to demand justice for their fallen colleague and highlight the growing safety concerns faced by healthcare workers nationwide.
The candle march symbolizes the medical community’s call for justice and safety reforms, following the public outrage triggered by the crime. The IMA has also declared a 24-hour service suspension, beginning at 6 am on Saturday, August 17, with only essential care in casualty departments remaining operational. Routine outpatient services and elective surgeries will be paused, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
Through this protest, the IMA aims to raise awareness about the increasing violence against healthcare professionals, urging authorities to address these rising threats and ensure better protection.
