To curb waste dumping into the city’s nullahs and rivers, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has launched a major project to install iron mesh on bridges across the city. This effort, covering all 10 zones, involves fitting mesh on both sides of major bridges to prevent waste from contaminating waterways. Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Abhijeet Chaudhari personally reviewed the installation progress at the nullah near the railway underpass at Vijay Talkies in Ward 17.
During his visit, Chaudhari stressed the importance of public awareness and instructed that informative messages be displayed on the mesh to encourage citizen cooperation. Under Chaudhari’s leadership, 59 key locations across Nagpur have been identified for this initiative. The installation of sturdy iron barriers and mesh is underway, with some zones already completed and others still in progress.
Waste dumping from bridges has been a persistent problem, causing blocked drainage systems and obstructing the flow of water, especially during the monsoon season. The installation of these barriers is intended to prevent such blockages and ensure that water can flow freely through the city’s nullahs and rivers.
In the Laxmi Nagar zone, mesh installation is being carried out at five locations, including Khamla Chowk and Sahakar Nagar Ghat. In the Dharampeth zone, 11 sites have been identified for mesh placement, such as Ambazari Overflow and the Yashwant Stadium Nag River. Other zones involved in the initiative include Hanuman Nagar, Dhantoli, Nehru Nagar, Gandhi Bagh, Satranjipura, Lakadganj, Ashi Nagar, and Mangalwari, with work progressing at several bridges.
This initiative is expected to enhance drainage during rainfall and ensure the smooth operation of Nagpur’s water systems. Key officials involved in the project include Executive Engineer Alpana Patne, Junior Engineer Devchand Kakade, and Assistant Civil Engineer Kanthawar.
