The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has set a September 14, 2024 deadline for Aadhaar cardholders to update their information, particularly Proof of Identity (POI) and Proof of Address (POA) documents. Updates are free until this date, after which a ₹50 fee will apply. This effort is part of a broader government initiative to enhance the accuracy and security of the Aadhaar database, which is essential for accessing government services, banking, and more.
Why are we updating Aadhar information?
The government requires citizens to update their Aadhaar information every 10 years under the Aadhaar Enrolment and Update Regulations, 2016. This is especially important for ensuring that all demographic and identity details, including names and addresses, remain current. Over time, as people change residences or legal names, outdated information could hinder their ability to access services such as banking, mobile connections, tax filings, and social welfare schemes.
Inaccurate or outdated information can cause delays and errors in government processes, creating bottlenecks in the delivery of subsidies and welfare benefits like the Public Distribution System (PDS) and Direct Benefit Transfers (DBT). The UIDAI emphasises that regular updates help reduce fraud and ensure the integrity of the Aadhaar database.
