Unidentified persons hurled stones at a Ganesh idol procession in Akot city, Vidarbha region of Maharashtra, late Wednesday, leaving some police personnel and others injured, officials said. The incident occurred in the Nandipeth area at 4 PM, prompting police to bring in reinforcements to control the situation.
Police have detained 68 individuals for allegedly throwing stones, and the process of registering a case is underway, said Sub-Divisional Police Officer Anmol Mittal. He stated that the injured were admitted to a rural hospital, and security has been stepped up in sensitive areas. “The situation is under control now,” he added.
After the incident, the procession was halted temporarily, and there were reports of both communities coming face to face. However, the police quickly reached the spot, brought the situation under control, and resumed the procession. Akola ACP Anmol Mittal noted that there was stone-pelting for a short time, but the police took prompt action to calm tensions and get the procession moving again.
Officials confirmed that the incident took place at 4 PM in the Nandipeth area of Akot town. The police had to call in reinforcements to manage the situation. The detained individuals are being investigated, and security measures have been increased in sensitive areas.
