In a significant effort to combat drug-related activities in the city, the Nagpur City Police, led by Commissioner Ravindra Kumar Singal, initiated “Operation Thunder” on October 17, 2024, as part of their ongoing “Drugs-Free Nagpur” campaign. The operation, which lasted from midnight to 6 a.m., focused on cracking down on drug trafficking, possession, and consumption within the city, showcasing the police’s dedication to creating a safer and drug-free environment in Nagpur.
This large-scale initiative involved a coordinated effort by senior police officers and units from the Nagpur City Police, targeting individuals involved in drug offenses between 2020 and 2024. Teams were formed from various police stations and crime branch units to locate and investigate offenders who had been previously booked under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
The teams carried out searches at the homes of these suspects, reviewed their criminal records, and monitored their current locations. During the operation, some suspects were discovered to be deceased, some were already in prison, while others had either left the city or vacated their residences. To ensure that these absconding suspects are apprehended, special teams have been established to continue the search.
As a result of this operation, a total of 153 individuals connected to drug offenses were detained and brought to the Nagpur City Crime Branch for further questioning. Their mobile phones were examined to identify any potential links to criminal networks. Preventive measures were taken against these individuals, and their details were meticulously updated in the police database.
Commissioner Ravindra Kumar Singal emphasized that this operation aligns with his vision of transforming Nagpur into a drug-free city. The comprehensive database now available to the authorities will facilitate quicker access to the criminal history of these offenders in the event of future incidents, strengthening the police’s ability to combat drug-related crime effectively.
