Significant Progress in Transforming Railway Infrastructure
Indian Railways is undergoing a major transformation, with the redevelopment of key railway stations to modernize infrastructure and enhance the passenger experience. As part of this initiative, both Nagpur and Ajni Railway Stations are being upgraded to provide world-class facilities and improve regional connectivity.
The Nagpur Railway Station redevelopment project was awarded to M/s Girdhari Lal Construction Pvt Ltd on 17th October 2022, with an estimated cost of ₹487.77 crore. The project is scheduled for completion within 36 months. As of now, the redevelopment of Nagpur station has achieved significant milestones, 70% of the East Wing Basement completed, 55% progress in the East Wing Arrival Block, and 65% in the East Wing Departure Block. On the west side, the Basement Parking is 45% complete, while 25% progress has been made in the construction of the Admin Building. Further work on the West Wing Arrival Block and Departure Block is planned after the relocation of existing utilities.
Additional developments include the North Foot Over Bridge (FOB), South FOB, and Air Concourse, each having reached 5% completion. Work on the Heritage Building has commenced, and refurbishment of the platforms and the platform shelters (COP) will begin once the concourse is completed. Similarly, the circulating area will be developed after the completion of the station building. Overall, the Nagpur Railway Station project has achieved 35% physical progress and ₹101.48 crore financial progress.
In parallel, the Ajni Railway Station redevelopment is also making headway. This project was awarded to M/s Key Stone Infra Built & Globe Civil Projects Pvt Ltd (JV) on 21st November 2022, with a project cost of ₹297.79 crore and a stipulated completion time of 40 months. As of now, the East Side Station Building is 65% complete, while the Type IV Quarters have achieved 80% completion. On the west side, the Station Building is 20% complete, and the Concourse has reached 25% completion.
To facilitate station redevelopment work, Central Railway planned a significant traffic and power block at Ajni Station, thereby, Platform No. 2 and 3 at Ajni Station has been kept closed for a period of 90 days from 12 September 2024.
Progress has also been made on the North FOB and South FOB, each of which has reached 20% completion, while the Central FOB and Through Roof have achieved 8% progress. Refurbishment of the platforms will commence after the concourse is launched. Development of the circulating area is pending, as the project awaits tree-cutting permission from the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC). The Ajni project has reached 40% physical progress and ₹59.36 crore financial progress.
The ongoing redevelopment of Nagpur and Ajni stations is expected to bring state-of-the-art facilities, improved passenger amenities, and better connectivity, contributing significantly to the region’s economic development. Both projects are progressing steadily and will provide passengers with a modern, world-class travel experience upon completion.
