In a surprise inspection drive on Tuesday, the Regional Transport Office (RTO) conducted an extensive operation targeting autorickshaw compliance, resulting in significant action against violators. By 6 p.m., the RTO’s swift action team had inspected over 100 autorickshaws, penalized 11, and collected fines amounting to ₹72,700. Additionally, two school buses were fined for violations.
The crackdown comes in response to a series of reports by Lokmat Times highlighting widespread issues, including non-functional meters, overcrowding, and unsafe practices in public transport, particularly involving autorickshaws and school buses.
Citywide Operation Creates Stir Among Drivers
Led by Regional Transport Officer Kiran Bidkar, Assistant RTO Manoj Otari, and Deputy RTO Avinash Raut, the operation spanned the city from early morning and continued late into the night. The inspections caused a ripple effect among autorickshaw drivers, with many activating their previously non-functional meters to avoid penalties.
Passengers welcomed the move, noting smoother rides and fewer fare disputes as drivers adhered to meter-based charges during the inspections.
Focus on Meter-Based Fare Compliance
“The RTO revised autorickshaw fares on June 16, 2022, stressing the importance of meter-based operations for fair pricing. Inspections like these will continue, and strict action will be taken against those flouting the rules,” said Regional Transport Officer Kiran Bidkar.
The operation underscores the RTO’s commitment to improving public transport services and ensuring safety and compliance in Nagpur. With inspections set to remain ongoing, the crackdown serves as a warning to violators and a relief for city commuters.
