Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar and members of India’s legendary 1983 World Cup-winning cricket team have pledged to support former cricketer Vinod Kambli during his struggles. Gavaskar, one of the country’s most revered cricketing figures, confirmed this initiative, echoing sentiments shared earlier by Kapil Dev, the captain of the historic 1983 squad.
Speaking about the responsibility the team feels toward younger players like Kambli, Gavaskar referred to them as “sons” and emphasized their collective commitment. “The 1983 team is very conscious of the younger players. For me, they are like grandsons. Some are like sons. We are all very concerned, particularly when fortunes desert them. I don’t like the word ‘help.’ What we want to do is take care of Vinod Kambli and help him get back on his feet,” Gavaskar said.
The cricketing icon, currently in Adelaide for the India vs. Australia second Test as part of the broadcasting team, assured fans that the team would devise a plan to assist Kambli and other struggling cricketers.
In recent years, Kambli has faced numerous personal and health challenges, leading to growing concern within the cricketing fraternity. These concerns were amplified after a video from a memorial event for coach Ramakant Achrekar went viral, where Kambli was seen holding onto the hand of his childhood friend, Sachin Tendulkar, in a visibly emotional moment.
As Kambli battles through these difficulties, the solidarity shown by his former teammates serves as a testament to the bond shared within Indian cricket’s golden generation. Their efforts aim not only to honor Kambli’s contributions to the sport but also to offer him a chance to rebuild his life.
