Indore: In a move to make Indore a beggar-free city, district authorities announced on Monday, December 16, 2024, that FIRs will be registered against individuals giving alms starting January 1, 2025.
District Collector Ashish Singh stated that an order banning begging in the city has already been issued. “Our awareness campaign against begging will continue until the end of December. From January 1, any person found giving alms will face legal action, with an FIR being registered against them,” he told reporters.
Singh urged residents to refrain from giving alms, describing it as “becoming a partner in the sin.” He highlighted the administration’s efforts in recent months, including exposing organized gangs forcing people into begging and rehabilitating several individuals involved in the practice.
The initiative is part of a pilot project by the Union Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment to make 10 cities across India beggar-free, with Indore among them. Authorities aim to tackle both the exploitation of vulnerable individuals and promote long-term rehabilitation solutions.
