Air India Express inaugurated its first-ever direct flight from Surat, Gujarat, to Bangkok on Friday, marking a significant milestone in the airline’s regional connectivity efforts. The fully booked flight, however, sparked widespread attention on social media due to reports of unusual onboard consumption patterns.
Passengers reportedly consumed nearly 15 liters of premium alcoholic beverages, including Chivas Regal, Bacardi, and beer, valued at approximately ₹1.8 lakh. The demand was so high that the crew announced they had run out of alcohol before the 4-hour journey concluded.
Adding to the flight’s uniqueness, passengers brought along traditional Gujarati snacks like thepla and khaman, as well as pizza and other items, which complemented the onboard refreshments. Reports suggest that all available food and beverages were consumed during the journey.
However, social media users have questioned certain aspects of the reports, particularly the claim of 300 passengers on board. Aviation enthusiasts pointed out that the aircraft—likely a Boeing 737—has a maximum capacity of around 176 passengers. “Even with a full load, the average alcohol consumption would be about 85 ml per passenger over four hours,” one user noted.
The event also reignited debates about Gujarat’s prohibition policy, given the state’s strict stance on alcohol consumption. One social media user remarked, “This highlights the demand for alcohol among Gujarat residents. Perhaps it’s time for the state to reconsider its prohibition policy and explore regulated alcohol sales to boost revenue, especially given the thriving illicit trade.”
