One of the readers of The Live Nagpur has shared their experience about the increasing stray dog nuisance in Nagpur, particularly in the Giripeth-Gorepeth area. The resident highlights the inefficiency of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) in addressing the issue, pointing out several lapses and areas requiring immediate attention.
“The pathetic attitude of NMC surfaces yet again. The stray dogs in the city are increasing by leaps and bounds. The NMC app does not accept the complaint as it keeps buffering. If you write to the officials, they say, ‘Post the complaint on the app; then only actions will be taken!'” says the reader.
“Sure enough, one dog catcher from NMC did come down to the Giripeth area and called to ask me, ‘Where are the dogs?’ Seriously, just because I complained on behalf of the residents of Giripeth-Gorepeth, am I supposed to track the dogs and hand them over to the dog catcher (who is paid for his job) on a platter?” the reader further added. “He took a round for barely 5-7 minutes, then left for the office and closed the complaint!”

While talking to TLN the reader outlined several serious concerns:
· Senior Citizen Safety: The area has a significant number of senior citizens who feel threatened by the aggressive stray dogs.
· Sleep Disruptions: Constant barking and fighting among the dogs at night has been affecting the health of residents due to sleep deprivation.
· Aggressive Behavior: The stray dogs form large groups, often fighting amongst themselves, attacking, or chasing passersby.
· Intrusion Into Homes: Dogs have been seen jumping into residential compounds, causing panic.
· Ineffective Complaint Mechanisms: The NMC app fails to function, leaving residents unable to register complaints effectively.
· Inadequate Catching Efforts: The dog catcher’s approach, such as visiting at inappropriate times when dogs are less visible, shows a lack of understanding of canine behavior.
· Uncontrolled Breeding: The unchecked population growth of stray dogs due to lack of neutering or sheltering facilities has escalated the problem.
The resident concluded with a question that echoes the concerns of many citizens: “Will action be taken before an incident occurs, or will this be ignored yet again?”
This heartfelt appeal hopes to prompt the NMC and the Dharampeth Zone authorities to take timely and effective steps to address the rising stray dog menace in Nagpur.
