Pune: The Maharashtra State Government has announced a significant shift in its education system, deciding to replace the existing Maharashtra State Board of Secondary and Higher Secondary Education (MSBSHSE) curriculum with the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) curriculum starting from Standard 1. The decision, announced by School Education Minister Dada Bhuse in Pune, will be implemented from the 2026-27 academic year.
This move follows an earlier announcement by former School Education Minister Deepak Kesarkar, who had revealed plans to adopt the CBSE curriculum for State Board schools. Kesarkar also stated that textbooks would be designed in line with the new syllabus. The Board has since approved a revised curriculum framework for Standards 3 to 12, aligning with the National Education Policy (NEP) and CBSE guidelines.
The updated framework introduces several new features, including allowing students greater flexibility in choosing subjects. It also emphasizes the inclusion of arts and physical education in the curriculum.
Currently, schools in Maharashtra operate on an annual academic calendar running from June to April, except in Vidarbha, where weather conditions affect scheduling. While CBSE schools traditionally follow an April-to-March calendar, it remains unclear whether the state government will account for Vidarbha’s unique weather patterns when implementing the new system.
