To address Maharashtra’s growing traffic issues, the Devendra Fadnavis-led Mahayuti government is formulating a new policy requiring car buyers to provide details of parking arrangements before purchasing a vehicle. This move aims to curb Mumbai’s persistent traffic congestion by ensuring vehicle owners have designated parking spaces.
Mumbai registered 2,64,324 private vehicles in 2024, pushing the city’s total vehicle count to over 48 lakh. Despite efforts to improve infrastructure through new roads, flyovers, and subways, the rapid increase in vehicles has outpaced these developments, worsening traffic conditions.
Under the proposed policy, car buyers without parking arrangements will be offered alternative solutions, such as renting or purchasing parking spaces. Chief Minister Fadnavis highlighted the plan in an interview with CNBC-TV18: “We have created numerous public parking spaces in Mumbai, and we are consolidating all parking information into a single app. If you don’t have a parking space, you can buy or rent one from the Mumbai Municipal Corporation. Without parking, it will not be possible to purchase a vehicle and park it on the road.”
The government is also working on integrating public parking spaces across the city into a centralized app, allowing car owners to easily locate, buy, or rent parking slots. Fadnavis emphasized that proper parking management is crucial for easing the city’s traffic woes: “You know how crowded the city is, and this leads to severe traffic jams. We are actively planning this system, which will be implemented soon.”
