Nagpur: Traffic has started on the second road underbridge (RUB) in Manish Nagar, Somalwada, easing movement between Manish Nagar and Wardha Road. However, residents have raised concerns over several infrastructural issues.
One of the primary concerns is the narrow width of the footpath and the overall road space on both sides of the bridge. “The underbridge is not wide enough, and its real test will come during the rainy season when most RUBs in the city face waterlogging issues,” said Kapil Nashine, a resident of Manish Nagar.
Uday Joshi, another local, acknowledged the convenience brought by the new underbridge but pointed out a major issue for four-wheelers. “Vehicles coming from the Pavanbhoomi side face difficulty due to a narrow road at one section. If people avoid shortcuts, the traffic flow will be smoother,” he said.
Safety concerns have also been raised regarding a broken divider on the Manish Nagar side of the RUB. “Despite U-turn facilities, many drivers take abrupt turns through the broken divider, leading to congestion and increasing the risk of accidents,” said Mohammed Altaf, a resident.
Another issue affecting traffic flow is the illegal parking of four-wheelers on both sides of the road from the bridge to Somalwada Square, reducing road space. Similar congestion is seen at the Manish Nagar end. Additionally, the road towards Narendranagar is in poor condition, adding to commuter woes.
Maha Metro has implemented a three-level system to prevent water accumulation in the RUB. A shed covers the open part of the bridge, a drainage system is installed at both entry points, and two high-capacity pumps have been placed to manage excess water. However, residents remain skeptical about how effective these measures will be during the monsoon.
