The employment system in India began in 1945, initially to rehabilitate ex-servicemen, and was later expanded in 1949 to register all types of unemployed individuals and connect them with potential employers. This led to the establishment of employment offices across Maharashtra. The District Skill Development, Employment, and Entrepreneurship Department continues to provide important services such as job candidate registration and job information, all free of cost. The department has been fully computerized, bringing transparency and efficiency to its operations.
Looking ahead, the department has announced a 100-day action program at the district level to further improve services. This article reviews the achievements and progress made by the department so far.
The District Skill Development, Employment, and Entrepreneurship Department plays a key role in job creation, offering various schemes and initiatives. The department’s website, mahaswayam.gov.in, allows candidates and entrepreneurs to register online without visiting the office. The portal rojgar.mahaswayam.gov.in provides easy access to job opportunities. The Maharashtra Government has also updated the department’s name and policy to reflect its expanded focus on skill development and entrepreneurship.
In order to help unemployed youth secure jobs or start their own businesses, the department provides free skill development training. The Maharashtra State Skill Development Society, established on February 15, 2011, plays a vital role in these efforts. Through various programs, schemes, and initiatives, significant progress has been made from July 2024 to December 2024.
Job Fairs
The department organizes both online and offline job fairs to help educated unemployed individuals find opportunities. These job fairs bring together entrepreneurs and job seekers, saving time and money for both parties. In the financial year 2023-24, the department hosted 4 offline and 9 online job fairs, with 5,347 candidates and 124 private industrial establishments participating. A total of 2,263 candidates were preliminarily selected through these fairs.
Skill Development Program
In Nagpur district, 701 training institutes have been registered to offer skill development courses. The Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Yojana, sponsored by the Central Government, and the Pramod Mahajan Kaushal Vikas Abhiyan, sponsored by the State Government, aim to provide minimum skill training. As of now, 52,489 candidates have completed skill training, with 23,210 securing jobs in private establishments and 644 starting their own businesses. Additionally, skill training for 21,955 candidates is currently underway.
To further expand job opportunities, the department has signed an MoU with 172 entrepreneurs in Nagpur district, helping match unemployed candidates with suitable job roles in the local industry.
With continued efforts in skill development, job placement, and entrepreneurship, the District Skill Development, Employment, and Entrepreneurship Department is making significant strides in improving employment opportunities and empowering the youth of Maharashtra.
