Nagpur: The long-delayed flyover from University Campus to RTO on Amravati Road is expected to be completed by the end of May, according to officials from the National Highway Division of the Public Works Department (PWD).
While most of the 2.85-kilometer-long flyover is complete, work on the landing near the RTO is still pending. The project, which began in May 2021, has faced multiple delays due to land acquisition issues and late approvals. Initially estimated at ₹318 crore, the cost has now escalated to ₹388 crore due to a 500-meter extension of the flyover.
Delays and Land Acquisition Issues
PWD officials cited delayed tree-cutting approvals and the acquisition of 400 square meters of land from Maharajbagh Club as key reasons for the prolonged timeline. “We have submitted a compensation proposal for this land. Once the district collector’s office approves it, we will deposit the amount via RTGS,” said a PWD official.
Additionally, PWD has decided to demolish the bridge over Futala Nullah near the RTO, as it cannot bear the load of the flyover landing. A new bridge will be built in its place.
Traffic Diversion Plan
To facilitate construction, traffic police have permitted PWD to block one side of the road from Law College Square to Bole Petrol Pump Square starting Monday.
- Traffic from Law College to Bole Petrol Pump will be diverted via Ahimsa Square using the road in front of the MLA Hostel.
- PWD aims to complete 75% of the new bridge within two months, after which one side will be opened for traffic.
- The remaining portion of the old bridge will then be demolished, and traffic will be rerouted from Bole Petrol Pump to Law College.
