New Delhi: WhatsApp users worldwide are at risk due to a sophisticated spyware attack that has compromised devices in at least 24 countries. Reports indicate that Italy alone has confirmed seven cases, raising concerns over a widespread cyber espionage campaign.
Zero-Click Spyware Linked to Israeli Firm
The attack involves spyware developed by Israeli surveillance firm Paragon Solutions, which has been used to target journalists, activists, and civil society members.
Unlike traditional cyberattacks, this spyware operates using a “zero-click” hacking technique, meaning users don’t need to click any link for their devices to be compromised. This makes the attack particularly dangerous, as it bypasses standard security measures.
Meta Confirms Attack on WhatsApp Users
Meta, WhatsApp’s parent company, has acknowledged the security breach and confirmed that its systems detected the spyware targeting users. The company immediately alerted Italy’s National Cybersecurity Agency to the threat.
Among the confirmed victims are:
- Luca Casarini – A migrant rescue activist and co-founder of Mediterranea Saving Humans.
- Francesco Cancellato – A well-known investigative journalist.
Casarini even received a WhatsApp alert notifying him that his device had been hacked.
Italian Government Launches Investigation
Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s office has condemned the hacking incident and assured that the National Cybersecurity Agency is conducting an investigation. However, the government has denied any involvement and, citing confidentiality, refused to disclose the full list of victims.
How WhatsApp Users Can Protect Their Data
With zero-click hacking emerging as a serious cybersecurity threat, users must take immediate precautions:
✔ Update WhatsApp to the latest version.
✔ Enable two-step verification for extra security.
✔ Avoid answering unknown calls or messages.
