Motorists on Amravati Road will need to take a different route as the stretch from Law College Square to Bhole Petrol Pump will be closed for traffic from Monday. The state PWD’s National Highway division will remove and rebuild a 50-year-old bridge near the RTO office to make way for the 2.85-km RTO flyover.
Those traveling from Ravi Nagar Square to Sitabuldi should turn left at Law College Square towards Ahimsa Square, then right to Raj Rani Square, and another right to reach Bhole Petrol Pump Square.
According to a local daily report, DCP (Traffic) Archit Chandak confirmed that the traffic department has approved the PWD’s request to close the road for bridge reconstruction. He assured that the detour would take only two to three minutes.
“The road from Bhole Petrol Pump to Law College Square will remain open for traffic,” said DCP Chandak. Traffic officials also mentioned that the RTO office can be accessed via the back road from Civil Lines.
PWD officials stated that the old bridge near the RTO office is too weak to handle heavy loads and must be rebuilt for the RTO flyover landing. “One side will be dismantled and reconstructed first, followed by the other,” sources said. The process is expected to take three months.
PWD also plans to rebuild two 50-year-old bridges at Ravi Nagar Square and near the RTO office, each costing ₹1 crore. However, the Ravi Nagar bridge demolition has been delayed. Officials said heavy machinery is needed to install girders using Ultra High Performance Fiber Reinforced Concrete (UHPFRC), and the bridge will be temporarily filled to support cranes. The ongoing work will not affect traffic at Ravi Nagar.
The ₹245 crore RTO flyover, starting from University Campus Square and ending before Bhole Petrol Pump Square, is part of the ₹478 crore Amravati Road Traffic Improvement Project (ARTIP) by MoRTH to ease congestion.
PWD is likely to miss its March deadline for the RTO flyover, now extended to May due to delays in tree-cutting approvals and road closures.
