Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has warned Meditrina Institute of Medical Sciences, Ramdaspeth, that its registration may be canceled if it does not obtain a fire compliance certificate, remove unauthorised structures, and install proper fire safety systems within 30 days.
NMC Medical Health Officer Dr. Dipak Selokar issued a notice to the 100-bed hospital following a complaint from Vikas Thakre, MLA from West Nagpur and President of the Nagpur District (City) Congress Committee. The notice stated that the hospital has been operating for the past 13 years without the mandatory fire compliance certificate, which is required before starting hospital operations.
NMC had issued a Nursing Home Registration Certificate to Meditrina Institute of Medical Sciences on January 20, 2012, and has renewed it annually for the past 13 years, despite the hospital lacking a Fire Compliance Certificate and essential fire safety systems.
As per notices from the Fire Department, the hospital is missing 29 types of fire safety systems. Additionally, fire tenders cannot access the side and rear margins due to unauthorised construction and the installation of an oxygen plant. The hospital has also built a kitchen and storeroom on the terrace, while the basement parking area is being used for a generator and other purposes.
Thakre filed the latest complaint against the hospital after receiving grievances from residents of Pawansut Apartment and others. In response, the Fire Department issued a notice to the hospital on January 9, 2025, and informed the NMC Dharampeth Zone and Dr. Selokar about the violations on January 9 and January 17, 2025, respectively.
Thakre also lodged a complaint against NMC officials with Guardian Minister Chandrashekar Bawankule, accusing them of inaction. Following this, the Guardian Minister held a meeting on February 12, 2025, and directed officials to investigate the irregularities at Meditrina within 15 days.
