The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway is nearing completion, promising smoother travel for commuters. A 76-km stretch from Igatpuri to Amane is set to open soon, with an inauguration planned in March by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, as per the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC). Officials stated that the final touches, including lane markings and painting, will be completed between February 25 and 27, ensuring the road is ready for use.
Step-by-Step Opening of the Expressway
The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, officially called the Hindu Hrudaysamrat Balasaheb Thackeray Maharashtra Samruddhi Mahamarg, has been opening in phases since December 2022. The first 520 km from Nagpur to Shirdi was inaugurated by PM Narendra Modi, followed by a 105-km stretch from Shirdi to Bharvir in May 2023 and a 25-km section to Igatpuri in March 2024. With the upcoming Bhiwandi extension, travel between Mumbai and Nagpur will become even smoother.
The Mumbai-Nagpur Expressway, launched in 2015 and under construction since February 2019, is built in 16 sections with a 40-year toll system. Designed for speeds up to 150 kmph, it ensures faster travel while incorporating safety measures like wildlife underpasses, pedestrian crossings, and flyovers.
To enhance passenger convenience, MSRDC is developing ten service areas along the route, featuring petrol pumps, food stalls, and rest spaces, making long journeys more comfortable.
Currently, the expressway operates from Igatpuri near Nashik to Nagpur, spanning 625 km. The Igatpuri-Amane section was initially set to open by late 2024, but delays in government formation pushed back the launch. MSRDC has opted to complete all remaining work before opening the entire stretch at once.
At Amane, the expressway connects to the under-construction Mumbai-Vadodara Expressway, linking Jawaharlal Nehru Port to Gujarat. Currently, a temporary route connects the Mumbai-Nashik Highway with the Samruddhi Expressway. The upcoming Bhiwandi extension will offer a seamless travel experience, reducing congestion, saving time, and boosting economic growth by improving transportation of goods and people.
