The Butibori flyover, which collapsed on December 24, was found to have failed due to overloading, as per an expert report that was delayed. The bridge has been closed for two months due to structural issues, traffic restrictions, and an investigation by the NHAI expert team.
Repair work is set to begin in 10 days and is expected to be completed in 45 days, allowing traffic to resume. Meanwhile, a two-kilometer-long traffic jam from Butibori Square to Dongargaon has become a daily problem, adding to commuters’ frustration.
Earlier, vehicles moved directly from MIDC to Wardha Road, but now they are being diverted through Butibori intersection, making traffic jams worse. No agency seems to be taking steps to fix the issue, leaving drivers struggling. Despite the inconvenience, toll collection continues without any relief.
The flyover was built under the supervision of then-NHAI Project Director Nitin Yeotkar. Local residents believe that after the poor construction, at least the quality should be improved now, and the bridge should be re-tested for safety.
A 187-tonne truck was reportedly the cause of the Butibori flyover collapse. After the accident, it was stopped at a toll post. In January, NHAI officials stated that an FIR would be filed against the truck operator, but they have not disclosed whether it was actually lodged. The expert team’s report also remains undisclosed.
Meanwhile, on January 18, a bike rider lost his life after being hit by a truck at Butibori intersection while the flyover remained closed.
According to a local daily, NHAI Regional Officer RP Singh said, “The expert report on the bridge collapse is ready. The improvement plan is finalized, and work will begin in 10 days, with completion expected in 45 days.”
