The Maharashtra Cyber Cell has filed a case against four Wikipedia editors for failing to remove “objectionable content” about Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, despite receiving over 10 emails and notices, sources said. Sambhaji Maharaj was the son of the renowned Maratha ruler Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj.
According to a media report, sources on Friday said that notices were sent to the California-based Wikimedia Foundation, which hosts Wikipedia, requesting the removal of content about Sambhaji Maharaj. However, they stated that only an automated response was received, and no action was taken.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis also took note of the issue and directed the police to take action. Concerns over historical distortions were raised by various organizations following the release of the Bollywood movie ‘Chhaava’, starring Vicky Kaushal, which is based on the life of Sambhaji Maharaj.
According to a notice issued by the Maharashtra Cyber Cell, the content on the Wikipedia page was deemed inaccurate and potentially capable of causing a law-and-order situation, as Sambhaji Maharaj is highly revered in India, PTI reported. The notice also stated that the information could lead to unrest among his followers.
Sources revealed that a case was registered against Wikipedia for violating Sections 69 and 79 of the Information Technology Act, 2000.
