The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has effectively contained the Avian Influenza (H5N1) outbreak in the Tajbagh area. According to the NMC Health Department’s closure report, the outbreak was first identified on January 31, 2025, following unusual poultry mortality. The National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD), Bhopal, confirmed H5N1 on February 4, 2025, leading to an official outbreak declaration and containment measures on February 5, 2025.
The Animal Husbandry Department swiftly implemented surveillance and culling within a 1 km radius, disposing of 3,054 birds, 108 eggs, and 1,000 kg of poultry feed. The NMC Health Department launched a door-to-door survey, identifying exposed individuals and administering preventive antiviral medication. The affected area was divided into an Infected Zone (0-3 km) and a Surveillance Zone (3-10 km).
Over ten days, 95,034 households and 2,31,425 individuals were surveyed, with 47 laboratory samples collected—all testing negative for Influenza-A. Health workers monitored symptoms, disinfected affected areas, and ensured hospital preparedness with dedicated isolation beds.
With no human cases detected and the zone fully sanitized, the outbreak is now under control. Dr. Dipak Selokar, Medical Officer of Health, NMC, stated, “Now we can finally say that the virus has been neutralized, but we are still keeping an eye on the area to cover any future cases.” The NMC assures continued monitoring and preventive measures.
