The Maharashtra Government has intensified its verification process to combat the rising issue of fake caste certificates. The District Caste Certificate Scrutiny Committee, Nagpur, is leading the initiative to ensure that only genuine beneficiaries receive reservations in education, jobs, and government schemes. To enhance the efficiency of investigations, dedicated vehicles have been allocated for on-ground verification and legal proceedings.
Nagpur has seen several high-profile cases of fraudulent caste certificates. In 2023, the Bombay High Court’s Nagpur Bench heard the case of Shivani Dhakate, whose Scheduled Tribe (ST) certificate was under scrutiny. Additionally, investigations revealed that over 200 government employees had secured jobs using fake caste certificates, leading to dismissals and legal action. Similar frauds were uncovered in medical and engineering college admissions, depriving deserving candidates of opportunities.
The scrutiny process involves field investigations, genealogical analysis, cross-verification of school and land records, and digital database checks. Suspect applicants are summoned for committee hearings to prove their claims. The use of dedicated vehicles will help officials conduct surprise visits and coordinate with local authorities for efficient verification.
Strict penalties await those caught using fraudulent caste certificates, including job dismissal, cancellation of college admissions, criminal prosecution, fines, and blacklisting. The government is also planning an online whistleblower portal for anonymous reporting. This initiative aims to create a transparent and fair reservation system, ensuring benefits reach the rightful recipients.
