As Nagpur and other parts of Vidarbha prepare for Holi festivities, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Yellow Alert for heatwave conditions on March 13 (Holika Dahan) and March 14 (Rangpanchami). With temperatures soaring above 40°C, residents are advised to take precautions while celebrating.
According to IMD, heatwave conditions are very likely in some pockets of Nagpur and Akola, while isolated areas in Amravati, Chandrapur, and Yavatmal may also experience extreme heat. On March 14, Akola, Amravati, and Yavatmal are expected to witness similar conditions.
In the past 24 hours, Vidarbha has recorded maximum temperatures between 38°C and 41°C, significantly above normal levels. Akola reported the highest at 41.3°C (+4.6°C above normal), followed by Chandrapur (40.6°C), Brahmapuri (40.4°C), Nagpur (40.2°C), and Yavatmal (40.0°C). Meanwhile, minimum temperatures remained within the normal range, with Buldhana recording the highest at 23.6°C.
With Holi revelers expected to celebrate outdoors, authorities urge precautions against heat-related illnesses. Experts recommend staying hydrated, avoiding prolonged sun exposure, and wearing light, breathable clothing. The IMD also predicts a further rise of 2°C in maximum temperatures over the next two days before a slight dip by 2-3°C later.
Do’s and Don’ts During Heatwave Conditions:
• Avoid direct sun exposure and limit outdoor activities.
• Wear lightweight, light-colored, loose cotton clothes.
• Cover your head with a cloth, hat, or umbrella.
• Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water, even if not thirsty.
• Consume ORS, homemade drinks like lassi, torani (rice water), lemon water, and buttermilk.
• Avoid working outdoors between 12 noon and 3 PM.
• Keep animals in shaded areas and provide ample water.
• Wear protective clothing and seek indoor shelter.
• Farmers should ensure proper irrigation, shading, and soil moisture while avoiding midday work and excessive fertilization.
