Mumbai: The Maharashtra government has announced a major overhaul in its education system, confirming that all schools in the state will adopt the CBSE curriculum by 2028. Education Minister Dada Bhuse made the announcement on Monday during a session in the state assembly, outlining the phased transition that will begin in 2025 with Class 1, in line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020.
The rollout will be gradual, with Classes 2, 3, 4, and 6 adopting the CBSE curriculum in 2026, followed by Classes 5, 7, 9, and 11 in 2027, and Classes 8, 10, and 12 in 2028. The state’s educational body, Balbharti, has been entrusted with modifying the curriculum, with the Class 1 textbook revision process already underway.
Bhuse emphasized that the shift would move beyond traditional final exams, focusing instead on continuous and comprehensive evaluation. The revised curriculum aims to develop students’ soft skills and better equip them for competitive exams.
Defending the decision, Bhuse stated that the new textbooks would emphasize practical learning and technological integration, ensuring students are prepared for modern educational challenges. He assured that the transition would enhance the quality of education and improve learning outcomes across the state.
With this move, Maharashtra aims to align its school education system with national standards under NEP 2020, providing students with a competitive edge in entrance exams and fostering a more holistic learning experience.
