A Save Life Foundation survey has identified several high-risk accident zones in Nagpur, citing poor road infrastructure, lack of traffic management, and pedestrian safety concerns. In response, the Public Works Department (PWD), under a World Bank-funded initiative, has allocated ₹1.5 crore to implement safety improvements at these critical locations.
The most accident-prone areas include Itabhatti Square, Chikhli Square, Manewada Square, Kharbi Square, New Katol Naka, and Omkar Nagar Square. Frequent accidents in these locations result from poor road design, missing signage, and inadequate pedestrian infrastructure. Itabhatti and Manewada Squares report high numbers of two-wheeler accidents due to speeding and poor lane discipline, while Kharbi and Omkar Nagar Squares are especially hazardous for pedestrians due to the absence of zebra crossings and traffic signals.
Under the initiative, the PWD will install advanced traffic signals, proper lane markings, high-visibility signboards, speed regulation measures, and better street lighting. Additionally, pedestrian infrastructure, including zebra crossings and foot-over bridges, will be introduced to enhance safety.
Krusha Gharde, Executive Engineer of the World Bank Division of PWD, emphasized the importance of this initiative, stating, “These safety measures will reduce accidents and ensure a smoother traffic flow.”
With ₹1.5 crore allocated for these improvements, authorities aim to create safer roads for commuters and pedestrians in Nagpur, significantly reducing the risk of mishaps in these accident-prone zones.
