Nagpur will soon be home to a striking new landmark—the ‘Vande Mataram’ Memorial—set to rise at the Vande Mataram Garden, a one lakh square foot site at Empress Mill. The ₹4.58 crore project by the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) takes inspiration from Delhi’s historic India Gate, built in 1931 to honor World War I soldiers.
As per NMC sources, a 50-foot replica of India Gate has been finalized as the centerpiece of the memorial. Made from sandstone and granite, the arch—estimated to cost ₹22 lakh—will bear the inscription “Vande Mataram”, with the names of Maharashtra’s martyrs etched inside.
An eternal flame, modeled after Amar Jawan Jyoti, will burn beneath the gate. Statues of soldiers and freedom fighters will further bring India’s fight for independence to life.
Conceived during India’s 75th Independence anniversary, the memorial will be dedicated to martyrs, ex-servicemen, war widows, and their families. The idea was proposed by then Mayor Dayashankar Tiwari and supported by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. Former NMC Commissioner Radhakrishna B, ex-MP Ajay Sancheti, and others were part of the planning.
The area around the memorial will feature landscaped gardens, wide walkways, lighting, and seating—creating a space for reflection and civic pride near the busy Empress Mall.
Once completed, the Vande Mataram Memorial promises to be a powerful symbol of Nagpur’s patriotism and heritage.
