Schools in Maharashtra have been instructed to complete the GIS tagging of their premises by April 30 using the newly launched Maha School GIS application. Officials report that schools in Nagpur division are progressing well and are on track to meet the deadline. This initiative is part of a broader effort to digitize school infrastructure data, following the launch of the Maharashtra Remote Sensing Application Centre (MRSAC) by CM Devendra Fadnavis. Schools began uploading data through the Maha School GIS app last week.
Accoridng to a media report, the Maha School GIS app uses advanced geospatial technology to accurately map school locations, along with photographs and key data points. It feeds into a central dashboard, consolidating information like student and staff counts, infrastructure details, computing resources, and amenities. The system is linked to the Unified District Information System for Education Plus (UDISE+), the national portal for tracking educational statistics.
To access the app, school heads must log in with their UDISE code and registered mobile number. After authentication, the app shows the school’s UDISE+ profile. Administrators then need to geotag the school’s location by capturing latitude, longitude, and a timestamp. They must also upload five required photos: the school nameplate, a full view of the building, the kitchen, separate toilets for boys and girls, and water facilities. For data accuracy, all uploads must be done while on-site at the school.
The GIS-based system aims to fill gaps in the educational data framework, especially regarding village locations, population distribution, road connectivity, school distances, and access to government services. By integrating this data with UDISE+ records, the state plans to create a comprehensive database to support policy decisions and improve programme execution. The Maha School GIS initiative is set to enhance educational planning, providing policymakers and administrators with real-time insights to efficiently allocate resources, address infrastructure shortages, and ultimately elevate the quality of education across Maharashtra.
