The owner of a BMW involved in a deadly hit-and-run accident near Chinchbhuvan Square has reportedly fled Nagpur along with his family, leaving police scrambling to track him down. The vehicle, which struck two men on a two-wheeler in the early hours of Saturday, was later found abandoned after suffering a tyre burst.
The accident occurred around 3 a.m., when the BMW (registration number HP-89/A-1592) collided with a two-wheeler carrying Yogesh Tulsiram Bopche (29), a daily wage labourer from Jagdish Nagar, Gittikhadan, and his relative Bhojendra Khobragade (55) from Balaghat. Both were seriously injured and rushed to AIIMS Hospital. Tragically, Yogesh succumbed to his injuries on Sunday evening.
When police traced the vehicle using the registration number, it was initially found to be registered in Himachal Pradesh under someone else’s name. Further investigation revealed it had been sold to a Mumbai-based dealer, Shahrukh Tahir Khan, who then sold it to Avantikumar Kothari, a resident of Darodkar Chowk, Central Avenue, Nagpur. Kothari is now considered a key suspect in the case.
When officers visited Kothari’s residence, they found the house locked, and the entire family untraceable for the past 3–4 days. Kothari, believed to be a car dealer, has not responded to any attempts to contact him. Authorities have since seized the BMW, inside which they also recovered the suspected driver’s mobile phone. Investigators are now working to trace the mobile numbers of Kothari’s family members to aid the search.
Meanwhile, the grieving family of Yogesh Bopche is demanding strict legal action against the individual responsible. Yogesh, the sole breadwinner of his family, leaves behind his wife and two young sons—Chirag (5), a Class 1 student, and Kiyan, just 5 months old. The family is devastated and anxious about the children’s future.
The police have registered a case and assured the family that a thorough investigation is underway. Efforts are ongoing to locate Kothari and any others potentially involved in the incident.
