Work on the 577-km Nagpur-Vijayawada Expressway, one of India’s key infrastructure projects, has gained momentum after Union Minister Nitin Gadkari recently reviewed progress on the roughly Rs 15,000-crore corridor. Officials confirmed the highway remains on track for completion by 2027.
The four-lane expressway will connect Maharashtra, Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, easing industrial growth across central and southern India and reshaping the logistics sector. Being built under the Bharatmala Pariyojana, it aims to remove freight bottlenecks and modernise the country’s transport network.
The project is estimated to cost between Rs 14,000 and Rs 15,000 crore. It will directly connect Nagpur’s logistics hub with Vijayawada’s commercial centre, significantly cutting logistics costs and shortening the distance to ports, benefiting traders.
Construction is currently progressing rapidly in Telangana, with modern engineering methods prioritising vehicle speed and passenger safety, saving both travel time and fuel. New industrial clusters and logistics parks planned along the route are expected to generate large-scale direct and indirect employment, while allowing faster transport of farm produce from Nagpur, Wardha and Chandrapur, as well as Telangana, to southern markets.
Designed as a “green expressway,” the project includes underpasses and overpasses to protect wildlife corridors, with land acquisition and environmental clearance hurdles cleared through administrative coordination.
