Recent changes to the Civil Registration System (CRS) portal have left Nagpur residents facing a month-long wait for birth and death certificates, officials and citizens said. The system was originally meant to ensure birth certificates within seven days and timely death certificates.
A new restriction limiting each user ID to a single computer, along with technical glitches and a revised verification process, has slowed registrations sharply. Earlier, one user ID could operate on three to four computers simultaneously, allowing 70-80 birth and death entries daily. That number has now dropped to 25-30, causing applications to pile up.
The portal also frequently goes offline for maintenance or server issues, halting registration work for hours and forcing repeated visits to government hospitals, including Medical and Mayo. The certificate process itself has changed: hospitals now only record preliminary details, which are sent to the District Health Officer’s office for verification before a certificate can be issued, adding to delays.
Nagpur district’s 761 gram panchayats, 29 municipal councils, the municipal corporation area and over 500 private hospitals are affected. District Health Officer Dr Rajkumar Gahlot said the single-computer restriction has been flagged to state and central authorities, with a fix expected soon.
