Nagpur: A 41-year-old woman from Ayodhya Nagar, Nagpur, who was lured into an online trading scam through a WhatsApp group, recovered Rs 8.22 lakh after swift action by the Cyber Cell of Hudkeshwar Police Station. The case also led to the freezing of a bank account holding a staggering Rs 96.56 crore.
The woman had initially approached Hudkeshwar police on February 2, 2025, reporting that she was added to a WhatsApp group that showcased fictitious profits from online trading. Misled by claims that other members were making substantial returns, she was convinced to invest a total of Rs 9,85,965 in various transactions over time.
The fraudsters continued to pressure her to invest more, warning through WhatsApp messages that she wouldn’t recover her money unless she proceeded with additional steps. Sensing something amiss, the woman lodged a formal complaint on March 17, 2025.
Immediately after the complaint, PSI Naresh Davre, along with cyber cell officers Dipti Bante and Ravinder Kaur Hazra, registered the case and uploaded the details on the National Cyber Crime Reporting Portal. The police traced the transactions to an account in S Bank (Account No. 001677900000042) and initiated urgent correspondence with the bank.
During the investigation, it was found that the targeted account held an enormous sum of Rs 96.56 crore. Authorities acted swiftly and froze the account to prevent further withdrawals. After confirming that the complainant’s Rs 8.22 lakh had been transferred to this account, the police sought a court order to facilitate recovery.
Following the court’s directive, the amount was successfully refunded to the woman’s bank account on April 22, 2025.
This commendable operation was executed under the guidance of Police Commissioner Dr. Ravinder Kumar Singal, Joint Commissioner Nisar Tamboli, Additional Commissioner Shivaji Rathod, and Deputy Commissioner Rashmita Rao. The effort was supervised by Assistant Commissioner Narendra Hivare and led by Senior PI Dnyaneshwar Bhedodkar, PI (Crime) Nagesh Kumar Chatarkar, PSI Naresh Davre, and the cyber team.
Nagpur Police have urged citizens to remain vigilant against fraudulent investment schemes and to report cyber fraud immediately to the nearest police station or cyber cell.
