A severe water crisis is parching the southern and south-western parts of Nagpur, leaving residents in localities like Hudkeshwar, Mhalgi Nagar, Manewada, Besa, Beltarodi, Ayodhya Nagar, and Narsala struggling with irregular and inadequate water supply.
With temperatures soaring and taps running dry, households are rationing stored water and turning to private tankers. “We haven’t had water for two days,” said Suresh Dhote, a senior citizen in Hudkeshwar. “Bathing is a luxury now. At my age, this is exhausting.”
In Mhalgi Nagar, Maya Chafle shared the burden of midnight water hunts. “We wake up at 2 am to collect whatever trickles in. Filling a bucket takes an hour,” she said.
Manewada’s residents are frustrated by unanswered calls. “We’ve called the NMC helpline five times this week,” said schoolteacher Kishor Jagtap. “We’re always told the issue is being addressed, but nothing improves.”
The Water Works Department of the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) confirmed that frequent power outages at pumping stations in Hudkeshwar, Besa, and Ayodhya Nagar are to blame. A senior official, speaking off record, said diesel generators are being installed at key stations, with work expected to finish in 10 days.
Meanwhile, citizens are organizing via WhatsApp groups to collectively press the NMC for faster solutions. In Ayodhya Nagar, Rekha Dandekar, a working mother, said, “I have to send my kids to school without proper baths. It’s embarrassing and unsafe in this heat.”
With summer intensifying, the race to stabilize water supply is now a critical priority for southern Nagpur. For many, each drop counts more than ever.
