Nagpur: In a major step toward enhancing pedestrian safety, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved the construction of four foot overbridges (FOBs) along the Nagpur–Betul National Highway (NH-47) between Modern School Square and Koradi.
The decision comes in response to growing concerns over accidents involving pedestrians attempting to cross the high-speed four-lane highway. The approved locations for FOBs are Modern School Square, Panjra Bus Stop, Karemore Square, and Koradi Bus Stop—areas known for high foot traffic and repeated mishaps.
Initially constructed in 2015, the NH-47 included service roads through Nagpur’s built-up areas and several informal pedestrian crossings. However, as vehicle speeds and traffic volumes surged, these spots became accident-prone. Following multiple requests from the police department, NHAI closed many of these crossings and fenced them off. Despite this, pedestrians continued to risk their lives by crossing through RCC crash barriers.
Taking note of the recurring dangers and public demand, NHAI has now sanctioned these four FOBs at a total civil construction cost of ₹7.12 crore. The contract has been awarded to M/s Oriental Nagpur Betul Highway Limited, with construction expected to begin soon.
The new overbridges will significantly reduce the risk of accidents while also ensuring smoother traffic flow, offering a safer and more organized solution for daily commuters.
