The Maharashtra cabinet on Tuesday approved the allocation of over 20 hectares of land in Chincholi village, Kamptee taluka (Nagpur district) for the establishment of a sub-centre of the National Forensic Sciences University (NFSU). The decision marks a key step toward strengthening forensic science education and criminal justice infrastructure in the region.
The NFSU, headquartered in Gandhinagar, Gujarat, is an institution under the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, and is globally recognized as a premier forensic sciences university. The upcoming Nagpur sub-centre will initially operate from a rental facility at the Vishwas Cell within the Police Help Centre building in Parsodi-Subhash Nagar.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the Ministry of Home Affairs has sanctioned a grant of ₹120 crore for the period 2025 to 2028 for the development of this centre. The facility is expected to benefit a wide range of stakeholders, including officials of the Directorate of Forensic Science Laboratories, judges, police officers, medical professionals, and public prosecutors. It is also expected to play a vital role in expediting judicial processes by providing expert forensic support.
Cabinet Accepts Pay Discrepancy Committee Report
In the same meeting, the cabinet also approved the report submitted by the Mukesh Khullar Committee, which was formed to examine salary discrepancies following the implementation of the Seventh Central Pay Commission for state government employees.
The revised pay scales had led to disparities, prompting teachers across the state to file petitions in various benches of the Bombay High Court. Responding to the court’s direction, the government constituted the committee through a resolution on March 16, 2024.
The committee reviewed inputs from 58 employee unions and consulted administrative departments before submitting its report on December 31, 2024. It recommended revised pay structures for 441 job categories.
The cabinet has approved the implementation of the revised pay scales with notional effect from January 1, 2016. However, financial benefits will be effective only from the month the government issues the formal order, with no arrears to be paid for the period prior.
These decisions are seen as significant steps toward enhancing the state’s forensic capabilities and addressing long-standing demands related to pay equity among government employees.
