Amid ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan, the Army and police have launched a search operation in a remote Kargil village for a 43-year-old woman from Maharashtra, who is suspected to have crossed over to the other side of the Line of Control (LoC).
The woman, identified as Sunita Bholeshwar Jamgade from Nagpur, Maharashtra, reportedly went missing from Hunderman village near the LoC in Kargil, leaving behind her minor child. Authorities suspect she may have deliberately crossed over into Pakistan.
The Army, responsible for security along the LoC, was caught off guard when reports emerged about the woman’s disappearance from Hunderman village. The police issued a lookout notice on May 15 in an effort to trace her. She was last seen on May 14 around 3 pm, having left her child behind in the village.
A senior Kargil police official, speaking on condition of anonymity, confirmed suspicions that the woman had indeed crossed over into Pakistan. It was revealed that she had been divorced since 2020 and had been living separately with her son since then.
Top sources in Army intelligence revealed that the woman, reportedly intent on reaching “Pakistan at any cost,” had undertaken a long journey and made it to Attari, Amritsar. There, she allegedly asked a Border Security Force (BSF) guard about how to cross over to the Pakistani side earlier this month. “She was apprehended on suspicion, and her belongings, including her phone, were examined,” sources in the Army stated.
“BSF became suspicious of the woman and her questioning was conducted at Amritsar. Army intelligence also questioned her, during which it came to light that she was in touch with a Pakistani number over WhatsApp,” said sources in the Army.
Meanwhile, the woman’s child is currently under the care of the Juvenile Justice Board, awaiting the arrival of family members in Kargil to take over custody.
