The second phase of the Nagpur Metro project is making swift progress along the Kamptee-Kanhan corridor, with the construction of pillars and viaducts approaching the outskirts of Kamptee. Simultaneously, soil testing and initial station work are underway. However, the growing problem of encroachments and insufficient police presence threatens to worsen traffic congestion as the project enters its next phase.
Road width disparities across Kamptee have created uneven conditions for construction. While some stretches offer adequate space for Metro development, others are constricted by encroachments, leading to daily traffic snarls. Motorists are already facing long delays, with local police focusing largely on traffic fines rather than streamlining vehicular movement.
Akhilesh Halwe, Public Relations Officer for Nagpur Metro, stated that approximately 95% of the land acquisition for Phase 2 in Kamptee has been completed. “Along the Kamptee-Nagpur highway, we’ve deployed a large workforce, erected safety barricades, posted traffic marshals, and installed speed breakers to reduce the risk of accidents,” he explained.
Halwe also assured that similar safety protocols will be followed within Kamptee town. “To minimize inconvenience, heavy construction activities will be carried out during night hours,” he added.
Addressing concerns over roadside encroachments, Halwe clarified that their removal is not under the purview of the Metro authorities, further highlighting the need for coordinated efforts between civic bodies and law enforcement to manage traffic disruptions effectively during the construction phase.
