In a major push towards sustainable urban development, the Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has increased the property tax rebate for certified Green Buildings by an additional 10%, taking the total concession to 20% in the general tax component.
The move comes in light of the growing number of redevelopment and new construction projects in the city, and aims to encourage eco-friendly practices among builders and property owners. The decision was officially announced on May 14, 2025, by Municipal Commissioner and Administrator Dr. Abhijeet Chaudhari.
Previously, a 10% rebate was available for Green Buildings that incorporated features such as rainwater harvesting, solar energy systems, sewage water reuse, and composting units. With worsening air quality and increasing temperatures in the city, the NMC has doubled down on its efforts to promote environmentally responsible construction.
In addition to the revised 20% rebate, further incentives are now available based on certification levels by the Indian Green Building Council (IGBC):
- Platinum-certified buildings will receive an additional 7.5% rebate, totaling 17.5%, plus the original 10%, making it 27.5% overall.
- Gold-certified buildings will be granted an extra 5%, bringing their total rebate to 25%.
Civic officials believe these incentives will encourage developers and homeowners to adopt greener construction methods, reduce energy consumption, and contribute to the city’s efforts in combating pollution and climate change.
To avail of the rebate, property owners must apply to the NMC Tax Department and submit all required documentation confirming IGBC certification and compliance with green building standards.
