The annual nine-day heat spell known as Nautapa began on a softer note this year, as unseasonal cloud cover and scattered showers brought significant relief across Vidarbha. Traditionally marked by extreme temperatures, this year’s onset defied expectations.
According to Dr. Praveen Kumar of the Regional Meteorological Centre, weather disturbances have led to a dip in maximum temperatures, and such conditions are expected to continue for the next few days. On Sunday, Nagpur recorded a day temperature of 36°C — about 7°C below normal — while light rains and overcast skies added to the respite.
Other districts in the region also experienced below-average temperatures, with Chandrapur registering the highest at 37.2°C, followed by Brahmapuri at 37°C. Buldhana was the coolest at 27.2°C. Rainfall was reported in several areas over the past 24 hours, including Buldhana (29.2 mm), Gadchiroli (31.2 mm), and Akola (20.6 mm).
With the southwest monsoon already advancing into parts of Maharashtra earlier than usual, meteorologists expect it could reach Vidarbha ahead of the typical June 15 timeline.
