17 months after the devastating floods of September 23, 2023, the scars remain—and so do the unfinished repairs. Despite approval of ₹204.71 crore by the state government to restore damaged river and drain walls and roads, critical works in Nagpur remain stuck. Reason? Funds are not being released on time.
So far, the state has released only ₹86 crore in two installments, while ₹72 crore continues to remain in limbo for months. The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC), which acted swiftly by floating tenders worth ₹164 crore within four days of approval, now finds itself helpless. Many works have been completed, but payments are pending. Others couldn’t even begin due to lack of funds.
The September 2023 flood had damaged 8.41 km of river walls and 61.38 km of roads. While 56 tender packages were issued for wall repairs and 41 for road works, several remain incomplete. In some zones like Lakadganj’s Prabhag 23 (Kumbhartoli), the Nag river protection wall hasn’t even started. Local residents now fear water will again flood homes as monsoon approaches.
Even after reminders from NMC and pressure from Union Minister Nitin Gadkari, the state government has failed to release the remaining funds. Former corporator Balya Borkar recently raised the issue again before the civic chief.
The clock is ticking. With monsoon rains nearing, Nagpur stares at another flood threat—not due to nature alone, but due to administrative neglect and delayed governance.
