Nagpur, known as the second capital of Maharashtra, is growing quickly — but its traffic problems are growing even faster. The city’s roads are now often clogged with long lines of vehicles, and traffic jams have become a regular headache for residents, especially in busy areas. While local authorities are working to ease the situation, a recent development could finally bring some long-term relief.
In response to the growing traffic congestion, Nagpur’s civic authorities have started working on the 2025 City Mobility Plan (CMP). The plan aims to improve road infrastructure and smoothen traffic flow through targeted solutions. A key proposal under consideration includes building eight new overbridges and underpasses at major traffic choke points across the city.
A special team is working on Nagpur’s City Mobility Plan to ease traffic as the city grows. They’ve identified key congested areas and proposed building new Rail Over Bridges and Under Bridges. The Rs 510 crore project will roll out in three phases: first, two flyovers costing Rs 90 crore; second, two ROBs and RUBs with Rs 100 crore; and finally, finishing remaining works and improving traffic systems.
Areas identified for new infrastructure
The CMP team has identified eight traffic-heavy zones that will benefit from the new overbridges and underpasses. These include:
•RBI Square
• Ajni Square
• Koradi Naka
• New Katol Naka
• Kamptee
• Medical Square
• Manewada
• Tathagat Square
The report highlights that traffic at several key intersections in Nagpur is becoming increasingly difficult to manage, causing frequent bottlenecks and gridlocks for commuters. The proposed infrastructure upgrades aim to ease congestion, improve road safety, and cut down travel times
Looking ahead, as traffic problems get worse, the City Mobility Plan (CMP) is an important and timely effort to improve and prepare Nagpur’s roads for the future. Once finished, the project should make daily travel much easier and give relief to thousands of commuters in the city.
