A day after a petrol tanker crashed into a newly installed height barrier on the Shaheed Gowari Flyover, a similar incident occurred on the opposite side of the same flyover on Wednesday, May 4, further intensifying concerns over road safety and traffic disruptions in the city.
The latest mishap took place around 1:30 pm when a truck (registration number MH27X2714) en route to Wardha Road from Zero Mile got stuck into the 3-metre-high barrier near Rahate Colony Square. As a result, one lane of the flyover — between Rahate Colony and Zero Mile Square — had to be completely shut, causing massive traffic congestion for several hours.
According to the police, despite clear signage warning of restricted entry and the presence of rumble strips to slow down vehicles, the truck driver failed to take heed and collided with the height restriction barrier that had been installed in the early hours of Tuesday, May 3.
This marks the third such incident on the same stretch of the Shaheed Gowari Flyover in the past 10 months, raising serious questions over driver alertness and the effectiveness of preventive infrastructure.
The latest crash comes barely 24 hours after a Reliance Petroleum tanker (MH31 FC 4161) carrying 23,000 litres of petrol rammed into the same barrier while heading towards RBI Square from Khapri. That incident had occurred just hours after the installation of the height barrier at around 2 am on Tuesday.
While no injuries were reported in either incident, repeated collisions with the newly placed height restriction barriers have triggered concerns among motorists and authorities alike. Traffic police are reportedly reviewing the visibility of signage and overall design of the flyover to prevent further mishaps.
