In an unprecedented achievement, three students from Government Polytechnic, Nagpur, have secured international placements with an annual package of ₹12.72 lakh each from Voltas Ltd, marking a significant milestone in diploma-level education placements. Notably, among the selected candidates is a female student, and all three are pursuing a Diploma in Mechanical Engineering. The roles are for technician positions based overseas, likely in Dubai. On average, diploma students from polytechnic institutes earn around ₹3 lakh per year.
Describing the placement as a “historic moment”, Dr. Vinod Mohitkar, Director of the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Maharashtra, stated, “This sets a new benchmark for diploma institutions. It highlights how skill-based and industry-aligned education can open doors to lucrative global careers—even for students from rural backgrounds.”
Traditionally, diploma holders receive an average starting package of around ₹3 lakh per annum, Mohitkar noted, making this placement nearly four times higher than the norm. Government Polytechnic, Nagpur, has consistently demonstrated strong placement records and has become a hub for recruiters in the region. The institute also extends its placement drives to neighboring polytechnics, offering wider access to job opportunities.
Dr. Rajendra Mogare, Principal of Government Polytechnic, credited the success to the institute’s robust Training and Placement Office (TPO). “Maintaining active industry relationships has been crucial,” he said. He further attributed the achievement to recent curriculum reforms introduced by the DTE, which have aimed at making diploma courses more industry-relevant and tech-savvy.
“Regardless of their specialization, our students are trained in emerging fields like artificial intelligence,” said Mogare. “We’ve also established a Centre for Excellence, where students engage in live industrial projects, gaining hands-on experience before they even graduate.”
Of the 600 students enrolled at the institute, 582 participated in the placement process, with 100% placement success, Mogare confirmed.
In addition to Voltas, the institute has unique collaborations with leading firms like Tata Motors and Wipro, offering selected students the opportunity to pursue engineering degrees at reputed institutions while gaining work experience.
