An attempted ATM fraud was foiled near Wadi T-Point after a vigilant local resident spotted something suspicious at a Hitachi ATM. Unidentified miscreants had installed a black metal strip, crafted to resemble part of the machine, inside the cash dispensing slot. The device was meant to trap currency notes and trick customers.
According to a media report, Gunaratan Prasad Dukre, a resident of Sanjay Nagar, went to the ATM to withdraw cash. He swiped his card and completed the transaction, receiving a debit alert on his phone and even hearing the sound of the machine counting the notes. But when he looked at the cash outlet, no money came out, the slot was sealed shut.
Sensing something was wrong, Dukre immediately informed nearby residents. Former Panchayat Samiti Vice President Umesh Rajput and ex-Gram Panchayat member Sandeep Sable inspected the ATM and discovered a suspicious metal strip fitted inside the cash dispenser slot.
The MIDC police were promptly alerted, and a patrolling team arrived at the scene without delay. They successfully removed the metal strip, which had been skillfully installed to escape notice. Thankfully, the ATM’s timer mechanism triggered a reversal of the uncollected cash, preventing any financial loss.
Following the incident, Gunaratan Prasad Dukre filed a formal complaint at the MIDC Police Station. In response, authorities have launched an investigation and announced that all nearby ATMs will be checked for signs of tampering.
