Nearly 5,000 devotees visit the temple each day during major festivals.
The famous Shri T Jagruteshwar Devasthan, located in the busy lanes of Jagnath Budhwari, is going to get a major makeover under Nagpur Municipal Corporation’s (NMC) new heritage revival plan. The project aims to protect the temple’s old charm while adding modern civic facilities, and is seen as an important step for improving old Nagpur.
The temple, believed to be over a century old, attracts nearly 5,000 devotees a day during peak festivals like Mahashivratri and Shravan Somwar. However, it faces issues such as poor crowd management, lack of sanitation, and ageing infrastructure. To address this, the NMC plans to restore the temple with the help of heritage architects, structural engineers, and urban designers, all working together under a single integrated project management plan.
The revamp will include detailed architectural drawings, RCC design, landscape planning, and drone-based documentation to accurately capture the temple’s current structure. The restoration will follow the guidelines set by the Heritage Conservation Committee and will cover everything from proper queue systems and open seating areas to LED lighting, water points, and improved drainage.

What makes this project unique is its strong technical focus. The team must have at least 10 years of experience in heritage work, have completed a heritage project worth ₹1 crore, and be empanelled with the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). They are also required to include experts such as civil engineers, town planners, and environmental specialists to ensure the restoration follows all national conservation standards.
The project also covers preparing a Detailed Project Report (DPR), site supervision, bill certification, and submitting utilization certificates to the state and central governments. A final completion report, as-built drawings, and a heritage methodology document will mark the project’s close.
For Jagnath Budhwari residents, this is more than just a facelift—it’s a cultural revival. Narrow lanes will be reorganized, the temple area refreshed, and with better facilities, it could soon become a heritage tourism spot. Shri Jagruteshwar Temple is set to become a proud symbol of old Nagpur’s revival.
