In several localities of South Nagpur, electricity has turned from a basic utility into an uncertain privilege. Residents of areas such as Akash Nagar, Avdhoot Nagar, Gurukunj Nagar, Vidnyan Nagar, Mahakali Nagar, Amar Nagar, Shakti Nagar, and Shesh Nagar are grappling with frequent and extended power cuts that have thrown daily life into disarray.
On the night of June 15, a widespread outage began around 10 pm and continued till 9:30 am the following day. Over 11 hours of sweltering heat, high humidity, and mosquito-infested darkness left many residents—especially families with young children, the elderly, and the sick—utterly helpless. For them, this wasn’t just discomfort; it bordered on a public health emergency.
Locals say this is not an isolated issue, but a continuation of what they call a decade-long ordeal with the Maharashtra State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (MSEDCL). Many allege their repeated complaints have fallen on deaf ears. Even when power is restored, voltage levels are reportedly so poor that fans struggle to spin and refrigerators fail to cool.
Negligence or Something Worse?
Growing frustration has sparked suspicion among residents. Some question whether the situation stems from sheer mismanagement or if there’s more to it—perhaps even deliberate neglect. The lack of explanation or corrective action from MSEDCL only fuels these doubts.
“There’s been no proper audit, no official communication, and no roadmap to fix this,” said one affected resident. “It’s hard to believe this is just incompetence.”
Accountability in Question
The silence from top officials has left the community demanding answers. With no official addressing the crisis or laying out a corrective plan, public anger is now turning towards Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who also holds the Energy portfolio. As both a state leader and Nagpur’s political representative, citizens say it is his responsibility to step in.
The Demands:
- Immediate intervention by the Chief Minister and Energy Department
- A thorough, independent probe into MSEDCL’s South Nagpur operations
- Public disclosure of findings and accountability for those responsible
- A long-term solution to low voltage and erratic power supply
What began as a civic inconvenience has escalated into a serious humanitarian concern. Residents say the time for empty assurances is over—the crisis demands swift and transparent action before lives are put at further risk.
