Nagpur: In a dramatic rescue operation, a 33-year-old man from Nagpur, distressed over mounting debt, attempted suicide by jumping into the Kanhan River in Mauda. Thanks to the quick thinking and coordination of Wadi Police, Cyber Cell, and Mauda Police, the man was saved moments after he leapt into the water.
The individual, Pankaj Rajendra Khobragade, a resident of Drugdhamna, Wadi, had reportedly left home in anger on June 28 following an argument with his father. Troubled by financial stress, especially over unpaid EMIs for a second-hand JCB machine he purchased for ₹12 lakh, he first considered ending his life at Futala Lake, but backed out. He then drove to Mauda and stayed the night in his car.
After keeping his phone switched off for two days, Pankaj called his wife and later informed his mother that he wouldn’t return, indicating his suicide plan. His family immediately alerted ASI Vinod Kamble of Wadi Police, who contacted the Cyber Cell to track Pankaj’s location. His phone was traced to Kanhan River Bridge in Mauda.
Police quickly shared his photograph with Mauda Police and alerted local relatives. While his wife was advised to stay on the call to keep him distracted, officers moved in to intercept him.
As the police neared, Pankaj jumped into the river, but local divers acted swiftly and pulled him out, saving his life. He was later transported with assistance from Sachin Pal of Wadi and handed over to his family after counseling, under the guidance of Senior PI Rajesh Tatkare.
The timely response prevented a tragedy and highlighted the effectiveness of inter-departmental coordination in crisis situations.
