The Department of Political Science at Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University (RTMNU) proudly celebrates its 80th anniversary this year, marking eight decades of excellence in education, research, and public service. As the first and oldest postgraduate department of the University, and possibly the oldest such department among all Central and Western Indian universities, it holds a unique and distinguished place in the academic landscape.
Founded in 1945, the department has consistently contributed to the intellectual and civic life of the region and the nation. Over the decades, it has nurtured generations of students who have gone on to become prominent politicians, administrators, teachers, journalists, researchers, social workers, and public intellectuals—making significant contributions across diverse fields.
Currently located in the sprawling campus of RTMNU, the Department offers a two-year Master’s degree program, with instruction available in both English and Marathi mediums—reflecting its commitment to inclusivity and regional sensitivity. With a vibrant intake of 120 students per year, it caters to learners from across Maharashtra and beyond.
In 2021, the University granted autonomous status to all its postgraduate departments, including Political Science, to foster academic innovation and research independence. Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the Department has since introduced a dynamic, forward-looking curriculum that balances academic rigor with employability and skill development.
Emphasizing both theoretical grounding and practical experience, the Department incorporates innovative teaching methods, including surveys, study tours, outreach initiatives, and co-curricular programs. These initiatives ensure that students receive hands-on learning opportunities and a holistic understanding of political science in real-world contexts.
Looking ahead, the Department is poised to establish dedicated centres for Election and Policy Studies, reflecting the rising importance of applied politics in today’s world. Further emphasis is being placed on Foreign Policy and Security Studies, aiming to institutionalize and expand this crucial area of international relations—one of the Department’s longstanding strengths.
The Department has been shaped by the enduring legacy of exceptional faculty, including eminent scholars such as Prof. Ashirvatham, Prof. Bhaskar Bhole, Prof. P. L. Joshi, Dr. J. V. Gavai, and Dr. M. Kashikar. Today, under the leadership of Dr. Vikas Jambhulkar, a dynamic and committed team of young faculty members continues to uphold and advance the Department’s vision.
Central to the Department’s success are its students—the true ambassadors of its mission—who actively engage in academic and extracurricular pursuits, striving not just for personal growth but to make a meaningful impact on society.
As it embarks on its 81st academic session, the Department of Political Science welcomes aspiring students who seek to explore political thought, governance, and public policy—and who wish to contribute toward building a more informed and equitable society.
