An Air India flight from Bengaluru to Delhi, scheduled for the early hours of July 4, was delayed after the pilot collapsed just before takeoff. According to a media report, the pilot was rushed to the hospital immediately, and the flight was postponed until a replacement could be arranged.
An Air India spokesperson stated that the pilot scheduled for flight AI2414 faced a medical emergency and was unable to operate the flight. A replacement pilot was quickly arranged, and the flight took off after a short delay.
Medical Emergency and Quick Action
An Air India spokesperson confirmed that a medical emergency occurred involving one of their pilots in the early hours of July 4. “There was a medical emergency involving one of our pilots in the early hours of 04 July. As a result, the pilot was unable to operate the flight AI2414 from Bengaluru to Delhi, that he was rostered for, and was taken to a local hospital immediately.”
The airline reported that the pilot is currently stable but remains under medical supervision. Air India also assured that it is extending full support to the pilot and his family during this time to ensure a smooth and speedy recovery.
Previous Incident Involving Air India Express
In a related incident on April 9, a first officer with Air India Express tragically passed away after suffering a cardiac arrest shortly after landing in Delhi. The 36-year-old pilot collapsed minutes after the aircraft touched down and was later declared dead at the hospital.
Following the incident, the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) launched a detailed investigation and called for a review of existing guidelines and protocols related to medical emergencies involving flight crew.
Regulatory Investigation and Review
On April 17, DGCA Director General Faiz Ahmed Kidwai issued an order directing investigators to examine existing protocols and recommend necessary improvements. The aim is to strengthen response measures in future medical emergencies involving crew members.
